“Yonder she goes, to the eye of the storm,

Lo, lo, the eye of the storm.

Life will she meet, his wisdom she’ll scorn,

Lo, lo, in the eye of the storm.

Death will she greet, in his twisted form,

Lo, lo, in the eye of the storm.

The lovers are warring, she’s caught in the storm,

Lo, lo, the eye of the storm.”

He stopped singing.

“What was that?”

Rasel looked at her, like he’d almost forgotten she was there, his smile razor-sharp. “Did you like it?”

“Yes,” she replied.

He tutted. “You shouldn’t. It’s a pagan song.”

He started floating again, humming to himself.

Again, she averted her eyes. But the question bubbled. “What happens to her?”

Rasel righted himself again at her question, shaking water out of an ear. “What?”

Suri’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “The woman in the song?”

She should have just said it was nothing, it was dumb to have even asked.

Rasel swam towards her and, when he got close, Suri shivered. Not from fear or nervousness this time, but from cold. A delicious, cool patch of water emanated from the ice prince. It wasn’t freezing; it was just right. She leant into his space. Gods, that was refreshing.

He smiled at her, as he stood beside her. “She got what she deserved.”

Suri swallowed. It was blissful, yet she couldn’t relax around this man. He put her on edge. She felt that thrum from him, the one calling her to kill and take her place in the world. As she’d felt it near Kol, so she felt it now.

Rasel tensed. “Look, there,” he whispered.

She followed his gaze toward the dune at the far side of the oasis. She thought she saw a flicker of something but wasn’t sure. “What is—”

An arrow pierced through the air. It was coming for them.

Rasel splashed up the water.

Fuck.

She didn’t even have half a moment to drag in a breath, before the arrow stopped. Trapped in a frozen splash of water, lodged in place. She stared at the arrow as it locked, frozen in the air for a split second. Then it fell.

It was less than a hand's width from spearing through Rasel’s head.

Shit.

“Run, Edi.”

She thrashed against the water as she battled to shore. She grabbed her stuff and scrambled up and over the dune. Once she was over it, she ducked and gave herself two seconds to breathe.

Then she ran back the way they had come as fast as she could, making it to the edge of the camp, gulping in breath after breath. Rasel arrived a minute behind her in similar condition.

“What was that?” she asked, as soon as her breath was back. “Who was that?”

He shook his head. “One of our desert friends, I expect.”

She pulled on her clothes. “Are they coming after us?”

“If they do, I’ll kill them.”

She nodded, staring back at the dunes in their wake. She couldn’t see anything. If they were out there, it looked like they weren’t in immediate pursuit. “I’m going to my watch.”

He nodded, still breathing hard. Still staring back out.

The rest of the day was nothing but watching.
